The Bachelor trailer: Colton Underwood’s women, drama, and more

Colton Underwood

Tonight, ABC unveiled the first The Bachelor trailer (watch here), and by and large, it existed to remind us of one thing: This show loves familiarity. After all, we’ve got Colton Underwood’s abs, crying, drama, “romance,” and a lot of situations that you’ve seen other versions of over the years.

So, what’s actually new about the show this season? Well, a big part of it seems to be revolve around the fact that Colton is a virgin. It’s come out in the promotional material and beyond just that, we’ve got a good feeling that we’re going to be hearing conversation about it in almost every episode. It’s something that producers really haven’t had before on this scale — some people tried to do the whole “born-again” angle with Sean Lowe’s virginity, but it wasn’t exactly the same thing and this also certainly was not something that he really embraced as a lead. Moving forward, what we’re going to get a chance to see here, though, is some more open conversations about it. Are all of these people really going to want to be with a virgin?

Remember, one of the most-interesting things about a season like this is that a good many of the women were probably cast thinking that either Blake or Jason was going to be the Bachelor instead of Colton … they’re having to adjust themselves on the fly for something that they were clearly not expecting. Hopefully, they nonetheless are going to find a way for this to be a romantic experience for them.

For those who did not hear, Colton’s season recently wrapped filming, so over the next few months he’s going to have the super-strange experience of trying to have a secret romantic relationship while also being coy about it in public. More than likely, Colton did find love at the end of all of this … or maybe he will at least think that he did. The show doesn’t always work, but every now and then you do find someone who manages to find a way in order to marry the person they ended up with at the end.

The Bachelor premieres on Monday, January 7 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. The series will probably run through around the middle of March, and then at that point ABC will likely shift things over to American Idol and, maybe eventually, another season of Dancing with the Stars if they so choose. There aren’t any guarantees there at all.
