Better Call Saul season 5 spotlight: What’s next for Jimmy?

Better Call Saul season 4

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to be offering up some Better Call Saul season 5 spotlight articles for one simple reason: We have to find ways to keep talking about this! There’s still so much left to theorize and discuss, and today, that begins with a discussion all about Mr. Jimmy McGill himself … or is it Saul Goodman?

At the end of season 4, Jimmy made the decision that he was no longer going to go by his old name now that he’s got his license back. Instead, he wants to start anew and turn the page as Saul — the alter ego he’s been working for some other businesses. It’s a game-changer for the character, especially in that it could alter how many people out there think of him and how he builds his reputation. That is the jumping-off point for us as we share three personal suggestions as to what is coming up next.

1. Establish the downfall of Jimmy and Kim – How did this relationship end? That’s one thing that this season should really explore, given that it does feel like they’re at the point of no return. Even if they are over, that doesn’t mean Kim has to be gone from the show immediately. She could operate almost in opposition for a while before making her departure (if that happens).

2. More time with Mike – How can we not have this now? While Mike’s storyline did pay off in a huge way at the end of season 4, it did take a really long time to get to that point. The relationship between these two was a big part of Breaking Bad, and it definitely does feel like there’s more to be explored here if the endgame is to actually meant to set up something further for these two characters. Otherwise, this really just feels like two separate timelines.

3. Establishing the new office – This one feels essential — if Jimmy is going to be Saul, he needs to cement precisely who Saul is in a business sense. that means getting himself the right setup, the right promotion, and the right clientele. The first few episodes of season 5 will be most effective if we’ve got a chance to really see Jimmy work within this mold and actually start to build what will later become a fairly successful, albeit shady, practice.

(Of course, we could easily add to this list an appearance from Gene, but doesn’t that feel like a given at this point?)
