Come Sunday night’s The Walking Dead season 9 episode 7 over on AMC, you’re going to get a real opportunity to see the new Daryl Dixon. What does that look like? Think in these sort of terms: He’s got a dog, he’s out in the woods, and he has not taken to be a leader quite like some may have hoped after the departure of Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes.

In the new sneak peek below, you can get a good sense of what is going on with the character … and that includes how he isn’t necessarily doing all that well. This is a guy who isn’t really eating regularly and seems to be embracing this sort of odd reclusive life, even though he doesn’t quite have to. While he may not be as great at forging emotional connections as some other characters, it feels like there is something more that could have been done with Daryl. He’s watched so many other relationships evolve, and yet here he still is, almost on the outside looking in of the rest of the world.
Do we think that Daryl has a much-larger role to play than what this particular sneak peek lets on? Sure, but some of that information is going to be handed down more over time and we don’t quite think that the series has made it to that particular point just yet in its new chapter. We’re still in this formative stage where the writers are trying to do what they can in order to catch up to the characters and explore who they are now — that’s not going to be something that they figure out in just a couple of episodes’ time. They just have to hope that viewers stick around with them given that this past episode, at least from our vantage point, did leave a few things to be desired when it comes to the development of some people. (Oh, and then there’s also turning Judith into too much of Rick, Carl, and Michonne all at once — she’s really not so old just yet that she needs to be anywhere close to some of these people, even if she’s really known nothing other than a life within the apocalypse.)
