The Walking Dead season 9 episode 7 preview: A Melissa McBride spotlight

Carol's journey -

Want to know what lies ahead on The Walking Dead season 9 episode 7? Much of it starts with Melissa McBride and her character of Carol. Based on early indications, this could prove to be the biggest episode we’ve seen so far this season for her character.

A part of what makes the reinvented version of the AMC series fascinating is that it is resetting mysteries and character stories in a way that would’ve been impossible without the time jump. Because so much time has passed, there’s a chance to introduce new emotional currents and ideas. This Carol may have the same essence of the Carol that was there before, but she has a different outlook. Her heart is in a different place and she is looking towards the future in a different way (is she married to Ezekiel now?). She also may be connected to other people in a way that she wasn’t previously. For McBride, she has a chance to explore some deep material with this character in the aftermath of Rick being gone. She’s also one of the longest-tenured cast members so we expect there to be a want for more of her.

Below, CarterMatt has the full The Walking Dead season 9 episode 7 synopsis with some more information:

Carol seeks out an old friend living alone in a wilderness teeming with walkers. Survivors make the perilous trek to a new home.

It is fair to say that this episode is going to expand the universe and bring about new people and locations — heck, the entirety of the rest of the season could do that. The idea of the Commonwealth is something that we’d love to see on the show — just so that The Walking Dead can navigate itself more into an urban environment and we can see how characters react to that. Meanwhile, there’s also a potential threat of the Whisperers around every corner. It feels like the writers wanted to wait to tie together Rick’s story before they brought these villains in; now, they are able to do this and hopefully, Alpha and everyone else associated with it will look and feel different than any other character we’ve seen.

Beyond all of this…

We’re still curious to see what the ratings for this week’s episode are going to be without Rick — but that’s not something that we’ll probably find out about until Tuesday. Given how much AMC is investing into this series at the moment with all the Rick Grimes movies and big salary bumps, you have to assume that they’re expecting at least some relative stability.
