Manifest season 2 renewal hopes: How confident should we be?
The first thing that is worth noting here is this: Manifest has been the most successful show for NBC this fall on many fronts. It performed extremely well in live viewers and beyond that, it’s done just as well in the 18-49 demographic. It’s been a DVR warrior, as well — it’s not fair to call it the next Lost by any means, but at least there’s some hope that this show could be successful in its own right.
Given that the show is so successful, why not go ahead and give it more than 16 episodes? It is fair to wonder about that particular question, but the simple answer here is this: It was a creative decision to cap the first season at just 16. That enables the writers to keep the story tight and not go completely overboard the first year. That could also help it in the long run to eventually get it more viewers and even greater attention. That is something that this show does absolutely need if it wants to really have a strong, long-term future.
A season 2 is almost certainly a lock, and it really comes down to precisely when NBC wants to make a formal announcement. Don’t be surprised if the renewal happens at some point over the next several months, or even by the end of the year. We don’t think the network is going to make you wait until May sweeps to hear anything given that there is no reason for that. What a second-season renewal effectively does is ensure fans that it’s not going anywhere and that is a tremendous asset to the long-term future. The more that a series like Manifest can make its fans fells comfortable, the more successful it will be. That’s why limited series, in part, tend to perform well — there’s no fear that a show will get canceled when there already is a planned ending. Nobody wants to commit to something unless they are confident it will be around for a while.
How worried should you be over the future of Manifest?
Not worried at all. Just exercise some patience and stay tuned — the announcement about a renewal will be coming eventually, and it’s mostly just a matter of timing more so than anything else.
The larger question with Manifest is just how long that it is meant to run, mostly because we do think that a series like this benefits heavily from having a clearly-defined plan as to precisely what the future could hold. That gives audiences more of an idea as to what they’re in for.
