What is there to report on here? In terms of the premiere date, not all that much unfortunately. Yet, the assumption here is that the new episodes will premiere in either January or February of 2019. It makes no sense for CBS to premiere it later; even though the network has no real investment or relationship with Big Brother Canada, it does hurt the franchise when these two series are airing at the same exact time. You have some diehard fans of both that wouldn’t be able to keep up!
Format-wise, executive producer Allison Grodner told us earlier this summer that the format is probably going to be largely the same moving forward, which means that there will be some more people from all walks of life and a game that will probably last around the same amount of time. That’s great news for everyone who thought it was the perfect length … but then bad news for everyone else. There’s no real need for CBS to make it longer given that they have a lot of other programming for the rest of the season. Also, it’d be harder to convince celebrities to give up more than a month of their lives in order to do this.
It’s fairly easy to see why CBS is bringing it back — the ratings were very good the first time around, surprising many people out there concerned that it was going to take up too much of a short period of time and also those who worried that the Olympics were going to swallow it whole. Also, this comes as a big financial benefit for their All Access streaming service, as viewers can scoop the service up for a month and maybe then use it to catch some of their other original shows.
Should you check out season 2 of Celebrity Big Brother?
So long as you love silly antics and a highly immersive game, there’s a good bit to like here! If you don’t like the standard Big Brother, though, you’ll probably want to steer clear of this as well. This is a standard game of Big Brother, just sped up to accommodate a shorter schedule. Season 1 wasn’t perfect, but we definitely do think that it brought enough humor and interesting celebrities to the table to come back for more … though the sooner the premiere, the better overall.
