Already this season, we have season installments helmed by Matthew Gray Gubler and Joe Mantegna. Now, we can report that AJ Cook has started some behind-the-scenes work on her own installment! She’s already kicked off some prep work behind the scenes (per her Instagram Stories) and there’s going to be a good chance for her to do all sorts of cool stuff in the weeks ahead.
Directing certainly is a big challenge (especially if you are directing yourself in scenes!), but it is one we certainly think that Cook is up for. Criminal Minds is one of the best environments out there for new directors, mostly because there is such a supportive group around you at all times. They have multiple other cast members who have been in this role in the past, and with that, you have good friends who can show you the ropes! You also have a rather large contingent of people in the crew who you’ve come to know and love over the years. All of these people put together, should offer AJ plenty of support. It also helps that you have someone like Cook who is very passionate about what she’s doing!
Typically directing is a process that takes several weeks, and that is why you don’t tend to see most scripted shows use the same director more than a few times a season. There’s a lot of work around filming that makes it hard for someone to direct too many episodes, especially if you are also in the cast.
As for what Cook’s episode will be about, that’s something that we’ll probably end up learning more about in the weeks to come. Is it fair to assume that a super-creepy UnSub will be at the center of it? Absolutely! The thing you have to hope for is an opportunity for Cook to inject some of her own creativity and flair into the story. For example, you tend to see a lot of this in Gubler’s episodes — take “The Tall Man” earlier this season, which also happened to feature an excellent performance from Cook at the center of it.
