The Big Bang Theory season 12 episode 9 spoilers: ‘The Citation Negation’

The Big Bang Theory season 11 episode 2

In the previews for The Big Bang Theory season 12 episode 9, it was abundantly clear that Dr. Sheldon Cooper was upset. To be specific, he was far more upset than he usually is. (We have to view this in degrees, given that sometimes this character permanently levels on the level of “somewhat annoyed to reasonably upset.”)

So what is he angry about here, so much so that he is willing to smash some of his white boards? Well, it may have to do with a discovery elsewhere, which causes him to think that all of the work that he has been doing is completely useless. For a little more on that, plus another important story, check out The Big Bang Theory season 12 episode 9 synopsis that CarterMatt has below:

“The Citation Negation” – Sheldon and Amy are devastated after learning from a Russian paper that Super Asymmetry has already been discovered and disproven. Also, ultra-competitive Bernadette asks Stuart’s girlfriend, Denise (Lauren Lapkus), to teach her how to beat Howard in a popular videogame, on THE BIG BANG THEORY, Thursday, Nov. 15 (8:00-8:31 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

When it comes to Sheldon’s role in the story, what we wonder at the moment is strictly this: Why he is so certain that the Russian paper is right? In the scientific community, it is very common that people can be wrong, even if we are talking about someone being wrong in saying that something else is wrong. Beyond just that, Sheldon is the sort of person who seems to be so stubborn and paranoid that he will continue to look into this until he sees some results. (We still think that comedically, the funniest outcome of this story will be Sheldon accidentally making a discovery after destroying a lot of his research — basically, taking a step back only to take a huge step forward once he figures things out.)

As for the other story of the episode, we just want to see Bernadette play video games just for the sole person of embarrassing Howard in it down the line. This demonstrates perfectly just how competitive a person Bernadette is … plus how much Howard loves videogames. Of course, we do worry that if Howard doesn’t have his video game, he more or less doesn’t have anything and his sense of self starts to slowly crumble. If he doesn’t have this to be good at, what precisely does he have? This feels like a major existential crisis that Wolowitz could have — after all, he’s not in space anymore!
