Saturday Night Live review

Tonight, Saturday Night Live is coming on the air with a new episode featuring host Liev Schreiber and musical guest Lil Wayne. Will this one turn out to be a hit?

What’s perhaps the most interesting thing about this hour going into it is mostly how little hype there really is. Maybe that’s because the Democrats won the House in the midterms, or maybe that’s just because the Ray Donovan star isn’t someone we would consider universally to be a household name. He’s got a loyal following among some viewers, but he wasn’t the person we expected to be announced as a host in the first place. We don’t know a whole lot about his comedy leanings, but at least he seems excited in the promo to be there and we hope that he does deviate somewhat from the tough-guy persona that he has within many of his roles. (Or, this show may be a chance for him to actually riff/spoof that in some capacity. That could be exciting within itself.)

From our vantage point, the real unsung hero at the moment could be Lil Wayne himself, who shows off some great comedic timing in this preview … alongside his own “impression” of Schreiber that is mostly him looking tough and crossing his arms. Wayne has shown himself over the years to be somewhat of a hip-hop renaissance man; he’s demonstrated a number of different talents beyond just music in addition to appearing on some sports-themed shows over the years. We’ve never been a huge follower for his musical career, but we recognize that this is the case with about 95% of the acts who appear on this show over the years.

As for what we definitely expect tonight, it would be a shock if Alec Baldwin did not turn up as Trump. It’s been more than a week now since the arrest and with the midterms in the rear-view mirror, this is a chance for SNL as a series to really play up some of the President’s responses to them. That’s without even mentioning some of the drama revolving around CNN’s Jim Acosta, which drew a number of headlines in the days that followed the midterms. Maybe we also get a Ray Donovan spoof mixed in here, but is Ray Donovan such a popular show that the majority of this series’ demographic is going to know what it is? (Note that we say this as someone who watches and enjoys the Showtime drama; we just don’t many other people within our inner circle who do.)
