Steve Carell hosting Saturday Night Live on November 17; Ella Mai performing
New SNL video – If you didn’t see our take on this past episode, be sure to watch our discussion on it in the video below! Also, remember here to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more, and also take a look at our show playlist. We have two videos up every Saturday night all bout the show , so make sure you don’t miss out.
Today, the sketch-show confirmed that the former The Office star, who seems to be building his acting resume these days with a number of critically-acclaimed movies, will be appearing as a host for the first time in a good ten years (this is his third appearance on the series overall). While it’d be tremendous if he brought Michael Scott over to the show as a pre-tape sketch, that’s probably not happening, so it’s best to temper some of those expectations now! It would be fun, however, if we got a chance to see him reprise his role as Brick from Anchorman if there’s a Will Ferrell cameo mixed in there at some point. The Thanksgiving episode of the show is routinely a fun one, with the writers getting a chance to unload some of the ideas that they’ve been storing up for the better part of the past few months.
As for the musical guest, be ready to see Ella Mai make her SNL debut! We get that many viewers out there may not be familiar with her music and with that we have a snippet below for you to check out. Soulful, no? There should be more R&B on the show in general and this gets them going in the right direction.
Entering this weekend’s episode, remember that the host this time around is Ray Donovan star Liev Schreiber — meanwhile, Lil Wayne is going to be performing as the musical guest. This is a show that, admittedly, we have zero read for given that we’re not as familiar with some of Schreiber’s comedic sensibilities. Typically he’s pretty serious so it will be interesting to see how far he’s willing to go with the material.
Schedule-wise, following these two upcoming episodes we’d expect SNL to take November 24 off and then potentially return either on December 1 or December 8. (If we had to guess, we’d say the latter.) There are typically three episodes airing during the holiday season and then after that, SNL takes a hiatus until January. There are about a million different hosts we’d love to see on board in the new year … but to make that list here would probably just lead to us ranting about how Lorne Michaels barely EVER hires people who are currently starring on other TV shows. Seriously. Instead, we get an actor best known for a great comedic TV character from many years ago. Not hating on the Carell choice at all here — he’s fantastic and we love him to death — but still.
