Arrow season 7 debate: Do you buy into latest Felicity Smoak twist?

Arrow

Arrow season 7 delivered on Monday night one of its most shocking episodes of the season — yet, we’re not sure we buy into it completely.

After all, is Felicity Smoak really dead, or is this yet another twist the writers are throwing at us? We’re thinking a little bit more of the latter at the moment, mostly because they have done this to us on this show in the past. Anyone remember that incredible cliffhanger where Oliver was stabbed in the chest and kicked off a cliff by Ra’s Al Ghul and left shirtless and bleeding in the snow for days? He easily should’ve been dead (not even Oliver should’ve survived that – the cold alone should’ve ended him), but with the help of a little penicillin tea he some how survived something he never should’ve lived through. So do we think Felicity is dead? Not for a minute.

Arrow is in a tricky spot at the moment. Its storytelling has been consistently strong, but also hopeless to the point of depression. For years, we’ve watched Oliver Queen try to save a city that, per the new flash-forwards, may not be capable of being saved. Everything has gone to hell once more, William thinks he was left by his family, and everyone is just in a near-constant state of misery. We get that this is a dark show, but they need to give us some beacon of hope to keep us invested since no one wants to tune in to be kicked down a hole every week. Take This Is Us as a good example – they have a lot of really heart wrenching stories that have us reaching for the tissue box on a weekly basis, but they give us enough hopeful moments that it makes the journey feel rewarding.

If Felicity is actually dead, another question to ponder over is this: Can this future be changed? It’s a difficult thing to determine, mostly because this is not a Legends of Tomorrow sort of situation. What we’ve got here instead is a case of nobody in the present understanding the future; if they don’t know what becomes of them, all of a sudden it becomes borderline impossible for them to change their fate. They’re just stuck in a near-constant cycle of sadness and misery and it’s rather tough for any of them to start to see their way out of it. This is not the state that we think Arrow wants their viewers to be in every week as well.

Yet, there’s gotta be a twist, and there has to be some element of hope that explains everything down the line. and keeps Felicity on the show. This is a season that is calling for a tremendous amount of patience but we’re still telling ourselves that it will be worthwhile when the dust settles. We just hope that there are some answers, or some hope for the other side, before we get to the midway point of the season. Give us some hope!!!
