Game of Thrones season 8: Record-breaking battle is even bigger than first thought
Speaking in a new story over at Entertainment Weekly, series star Peter Dinklage (who plays Tyrion on the series and was hilarious in the film Living in Oblivion if you haven’t seen that) notes that the epic battle is “brutal. It makes Battle of the Bastards look like a theme park.” To go along with that, the reports of a 55-day shoot for this battle may still not offer the full story here. There were weeks of work done via soundstages as well as other elements to make this precisely what it was. Just in case you were wondering why it took so many months in order to film just six episodes, here is your answer.
While all of this may sound a tad extreme, you then do need to remember that we are talking here about a battle that feels creatively justified based on where we are right now in the story. At the end of season 7, the White Walker army was breaking down the wall and was ready to commence and invasion of Westeros. They have an ice dragon, countless soldiers, and mysticism on their side. This is a battle that is going to need to unite all of the seven kingdoms. It’s not so much about who sits on the Iron Throne anymore. Instead, it’s a little bit more about whether or not everyone lives in order for that to be possible. We do think that there will be some characters who act selfishly, mostly because this does remain that sort of series, but whether or not those acts move everyone towards the downfall of civilization remains to be seen.
The final season of Game of Thrones will officially premiere within the first half of 2019. Here’s to hoping that at some point early next year, HBO will announce a firm premiere date and some sort of trailer soon after that. They probably don’t need to hype it up too much since it is the final season and everyone wants to see this journey to the end. It’s bound to shatter some ratings records regardless and we are very curious to see those numbers!
