To be specific, we’re talking about the way in which Pete Davidson, a cast member on the show, has handled his engagement to Ariana Grande — and, to go along with it, a joke he told in a recent promo for this weekend’s episode in which he proposed to Maggie Rogers. She chose earlier today (just 30 minutes before the show tonight) to release a new song entitled “thank u, next,” and tonight, he actually acknowledged her in a direct way.
At the end of his Weekend Update sketch tonight, one in which he skewered a number of different politicians, Pete praised Ariana and said a number of nice things about her — as for the reason for the breakup, he just said that sometimes “things don’t work out.” (He did also joke about moving back in with his mom.)
With Pete’s discussion at the end of the episode tonight, it does feel like everyone is going to get an opportunity here to take a few deep breaths and then actually start to move on. We know that things got a little bit dramatic thanks to the tabloids and social media, but maybe everyone will move on now. For Pete, that does mean trying to move on from jokes related to her — we don’t think that he should continue to skewer the relationship, mostly just because he then runs the risk of being known about that and not really anything else in his career. He’s a creative comedian and there are many other things that he can touch on.
