Saturday Night Live review: Tina Fey, Adam Grossman, & Jonah Hill highlights

Saturday Night Live

Tonight, Jonah Hill was the host for Saturday Night Live and with that came some excitement … but also unease. To date, we’ve found his episodes to be a mixed bag. Much of time, it’s based primarily on the quality of the writing behind them. If the ideas behind the sketches deliver, then often Jonah can hit some home runs. SNL is a collaborative effort, and his episodes of the show are the best when things are firing on all cylinders.

Jonah opened tonight by talking about the five-timers’ club, and how excited he is to finally get the jacket. In the early going tonight, Tina Fey showed up in order to bring Jonah into the official lounge … where he ended up joining the likes of Candice Bergen as well as Drew Barrymore. They told him that a lot of the men in the club freaked them out, Candice called him Seth Rogen, and eventually, he got a women’s jacket. While this wasn’t hilarious, it was worth a smile or two.

Adam Grossman – This was ridiculous, as it often is — but it was also hilarious. The best part of seeing Jonah back as his six-year old character was seeing him just shout Bob Marley lyrics at Leslie Jones, who could barely keep it together. Just a reminder — he’s six! There’s only so much that he actually knows about the world.

Blue Wave – This was a fun way for the show to skewer the midterm elections — by showing Democrats on the verge of panic and pretending like everything was okay when it really wasn’t. (How many people out there are feeling like this?)

On-air proposal – This is a great example of a sketch that got off to a great start, but fell apart soon after the writers didn’t know how to end it. Jonah’s character wanted to propose on-air and he did that, but she repeatedly said no in a series of ridiculous ways. In the end, she proposed to him in an even more ridiculous way.

Divided we stand – The basis for this sketch was loose at best — a bunch of terrible, low-rent musical ideas with a political twist. None of this really worked even though some of the lines were funny — like Chris Redd commenting on the cast’s diversity by noting how one person in that cast though “diversity” meant having a divorced parent.

Teacher fell down – This almost felt like this was a part of the “united we stand” sketch featuring Kate McKinnon as a teacher who fell over and started to make it into some sort of a dramatic exchange with deeper meaning.

Weekend Update – There was a lot that went on here, but the majority of it was pretty funny including Pete Davidson roasting various politicians (and praising Ariana Grande) and then also Kenan Thompson coming out and doing his David Ortiz in celebration of the World Series. We will never get tired of this impression … ever.

America’s Got Talent: Wait, They’re Good? – This was a fun little lay on the NBC show, though it could have been a million times better. For starters, why didn’t the producers decide to give us actually good impressions of the judges? This felt almost like product placement for another show with some contestants shows up, acting ridiculous, but having some actual talent. (Fun fact: Melissa Villasenor was actually on the show.)

Pug wigs – First of all, we should note that we don’t think that all of the dogs in this sketch were actually pugs. Hey, working with pugs is not always easy. Let’s be honest here — working with dogs isn’t always easy. This was basically Whiskers R We but with dogs and Jonah Hill being a deadpan store owner.

CarterMatt Verdict

This episode was really good at the start and, in general, very watchable. There were some down moments, but Hill delivered and overall, there were funny, creative ideas from start to finish.
