This episode could prove to be a fine example of precisely what The Good Doctor does best — telling a story that is taxing, emotionally complicated, and in the end rather emotional from start to finish. It begins with something simple: An injury to a finger from a violinist. Is it tendinitis, or is it flesh-eating bacteria? The decision that Shaun and Morgan make regarding this woman’s treatment is one that could be life-changing. One wrong move, and everything goes from bad to worse … and the promo below certainly makes it seem as though things are going to be getting worse. Shaun has to figure out if there is a way to still save this patient after things start to go downhill and, beyond that, Reznick may actually show more of her vulnerable side.
For most of the season, what we’ve come to know about Morgan is simply this: While she cares about her patients, she doesn’t like to show it — she’s career and acclaim first. She wants to do everything within her power to try and scale the ladder to be the most successful doctor possible. Ambition is good, but ambition without any hardship along the way is basically putting you in a position where you are destined to fail. This is absolutely something that Morgan needs to realize, whether it is in this episode or somewhere else down the road.
At the end of the promo, though, you can briefly see Morgan getting emotional — this is when the ice may start to break, and she may realize that she really does need to have someone in her corner.
