Is The Long Night the title for the Game of Thrones prequel series?
Now, we’re getting a sense as to what could be the title for this new series: The Long Night. That’s something that George R.R. Martin himself announced in a new post on Twitter this week alongside the news of Watts’ involvement. The Long Night is a reference to an event noted on Game of Thrones in the past — a time many years ago when darkness fell for a generation. This could be the birthplace of the White Walkers, something that has been rumored to be a subject for this particular prequel.
It is still possible that The Long Night is a working title that changes in the future; we just think that it is notable that HBO itself has not confirmed anything at the moment when it comes to the future of the series. One other thing that we don’t want to overlook here is Martin noting that this is “the first” of the successor series that has been ordered. He has long suggested that the network could eventually order more; the originally ordered multiple spin-offs / prequels into development, and one of the thing that we’ve wondered is if they would end up doing a number of limited series as opposed to a full-on series that would last for several years. This is an intriguing idea in that it would allow them to explore different eras of Westeros history without having to match the overall size and scope of the original series.
Given that The Long Night, if that remains the title, will not premiere until 2020 at the earliest, there is a lot of time still to figure everything out. By the time this show premieres, we also imagine that there will be some other news that is out there regarding some of the other series that the network could be ordering … if they choose to do so.
