Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers: How everyone comes together

Game of Thrones

To date, HBO has been notoriously cagey when it comes to Game of Thrones season 8, and there does remain a fairly simple reason for that. With the White Walker threat now staring everyone in the face, it is the sort of situation where almost everyone realizes (except for maybe Cersei Lannister) that some of the petty disputes that they all had are secondary to whatever is coming up now. What these characters are facing moving forward is so much more ominous and dangerous than anything that they have taken on before and it requires a certain degree of putting one’s ego to the side. That may not be altogether easy for some of these characters, but it does absolutely still feel necessary.

So how are the people behind the scenes describing these final six episodes — at least, in a way that makes a certain degree of sense? Speaking as a part of a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-executive producer Bryan Cogman noted that this season is “about all of these disparate characters coming together to face a common enemy, dealing with their own past, and defining the person they want to be in the face of certain death … It’s an incredibly emotional haunting bittersweet final season and I think it honors very much what [author George R.R. Martin] set out to do — which is flipping this kind of story on its head.”

We do think that this “flip” is the most effective way to describe the story of this season, given that for many years, it did feel like various kingdoms all battling for supremacy while this White Walker threat bubbled underneath the surface. Other than the Night’s Watch, everyone from King’s Landing to Dorne was willing to just overlook the dangers from the White Walkers until they were knocking at their metaphorical door.

Production-wise, Kit Harington also notes to the publication that there were many challenges just filming the final season; one of the longest TV battles ever is a part of what lies ahead, and beyond that scenes that used to take one day now take multiple days as everyone involved wants to ensure that things are 100% perfect.
