According to a new report coming in right now via Variety, Marvel is in the process of developing a miniseries featuring Falcon and Winter Soldier — two very familiar characters within the cinematic universe. They may not be at the top tier in terms of familiarity, they absolutely have many a loyal fan already. Giving them a standalone project is a way to play into that base, and also keep some familiar faces in the fold given that it is still unclear just what’s going to happen to several other big names following the final Avengers movie, which remains largely shrouded in mystery.
This is not the first Marvel – Disney collaboration proposed for the streaming service, as they are already developing series centered around Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston) as well as Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). We presume that it is possible that the studio could recast either Anthony Mackie or Sebastian Plan (who play the aforementioned characters), but that appears unlikely. While we have seen recastings happen before in the MCU (mostly in the earlier stages when things were still getting figured out), we do think all parties involved would like to avoid that.
This new Falcon / Winter Soldier series would be written by Empire co-executive producer Malcolm Spellman.
As much as it may stink to be losing two Marvel series off of Netflix in Luke Cage and Iron Fist, does hearing this news make up for it? We doubt it since there are already loyal followings there; yet, this does ensure that the company continues to have a rather varied slate of shows out there even if their Netflix collaborations are starting to dry up. (Technically, the service does still have Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher — they are not technically done with them yet by any means.)
