Yet, we also do like to be the sort of people who think in terms of the long-term future just as much as we think about what lies directly before us. With that in mind, we do think that there’s more urgency surrounding an early renewal campaign than ever before.

The past few weeks have shown us something about Netflix that wasn’t necessarily true a few years ago: They’re far more willing to cancel shows than they once were. It used to be that getting a show on the service would equal you getting at least a few years to try things out in order to see what the audience was. Netflix now has the luxury (or at least it’s a luxury for them) of being able to replace one show almost immediately with another if something is not working. That’s why we have seen over the past few weeks Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and American Vandal all be canceled. Meanwhile, Orange is the New Black is ending and there have been reports about the end of Fuller House coming sooner rather than later. That’s a lot of shows.

We’ve said in the past that Netflix did not go through all of the trouble to save Lucifer just to give it only one season, and we still believe that. Yet, these past few weeks have also taught us that if the series does perform below their expectations, they may not be as patient as we previously hoped. That’s why it really is going to be important when the series comes out (hopefully within the first several months of 2019) that viewers choose to watch it within the first couple of months of it streaming. Beyond just that, we have to hope that almost everyone who starts it finishes it. Netflix is going to need reassurance that this is a series that performs well and should be brought back on the basis of that.

So what can you do while waiting to see what the future holds? For now, we’d suggest that you just keep finding a way to spread the word on social media, especially to those who may have false notions as to what it’s really about. This may be a series with an ominous name, but it’s really about understanding and showing not to judge a book by its cover.
