Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo cites inclusiveness as reason to continue

Grey’s Anatomy is currently in its fifteenth season, and while there is no confirmation on a season 16, right now that seems likely. Ellen Pompeo, after all, has a deal that will keep her employed on the show until then. Our presumption has long been that the series will last however long the actress wants to be there, and it certainly does seem as though she’s committed at least for now. Beyond that, though, things are a little bit unclear.

Speaking in a new interview on Ellen, Pompeo did her part to explain one specific reason why she remains committed to the series:

A teenager was in the show and he was gay, and he played a gay character on my show … After we had filmed the whole entire episode, he said to me, ‘My whole life, I’ve watched this show with my parents, and I’ve sort of used the show as a way to tell my parents that I was gay, and to show my parents that it’s okay, that I’m not different, there’s nothing really wrong with me.’”

That story helped Pompeo to realize further that they were “changing lives” doing the show and that’s an inspiration for them to keep going — there is the potential to create so much more of a positive impact on viewers.

Eventually, though, there will be a point when everyone does want to move on. Yet, it’s clear that we are not at this particular point just yet. If the ratings stay good and more inspirational stories, why not keep things going for a little while? The ratings for season 15 are still strong — it’s one of ABC’s most-popular shows, and Netflix has really proven itself to be one an enormous asset to the series. It’s been able to routinely bring on board new viewers from the very beginning, and in a rather-incredible way.
