Shameless season 9 midseason finale: How could Fiona leave?
Here is what we know at the moment: Emmy Rossum is leaving at the end of the season, which is returning in the new year. With that in mind, you do want to figure out a way in which her exit will make some sense. There are a few different directions in which this story could go, but it does seem like her recent failures will be a jumping-off point. Remember now that Sunday’s episode concluded with her realizing that her business ventures were falling apart and she was forcing herself to move back home with the other Gallaghers.

As executive producer John Wells notes to Entertainment Weekly, this is the sort of thing that will cause some conversations to go off inside of Fiona’s head — after all, she needs to start thinking a little bit more of what her future will truly hold:
I don’t know, how would you feel as a 28-year-old going back to live in your family house? [Laughs] I think you can imagine that she’s going to have some real struggles with what’s happened to her, some anger and frustration. With of all the things that we satirize and the humor and the outrageousness, we try to show how family pulls together, because no matter how flawed we all are, family can be a huge part of what gets you through life. You can kind of anticipate that going forward.
The further along that this story goes, the more excited we’re going to get — for now, though, the sensible answer around Fiona’s exit here is that we’re probably going to see her realize that maybe a future far away from the problems of the past could be smart. Really, it could be the one thing that actually allows her to find the success that she’s seeking. (For the record, we’d love to see Fiona back in season 10, even as a one-off, to offer up something resembling a progress report. She was close to actually finding a better life this time!)
