Last Week Tonight with John Oliver focuses on attack ads, Ted Cruz, and Trump
After Oliver briefly mentioned Kanye West, the climate report, and some other depressing things this week, Oliver shifted over to the midterm elections and some of the campaigns that are underway. Basically, there are negative ads, really negative ads, and then also people creating the most violent ads possible. Also, we had an incredibly amusing attack ad against Ted Cruz in which an elderly man just had a wonderful way of saying his name … Ted. It was great.
The only thing that was better? Oliver finding this man and then taping him saying a number of other random things in his signature voice. This may have been even better than Oliver bringing on board Lord Buckethead!
This opening segment was short, very short, and we do think that this is a little bit of a lost opportunity here. Why wouldn’t you want to amplify some of the other ridiculous attack ads that are out there? It seems like the sort of thing that you could take on in relation to both different sides and some of the crazy/bizarre things that have been said on the campaign trail. It’s riddled with hypocrisy, desperate publicity stunts, and so much more. That’s what makes political ads so tough as an influencing factor. They can be manipulative and often either play on fear or baseless allegations.
There is no new episode of Last Week Tonight next week — with that in mind, we’ll be waiting for a while to see if there are any more political attack-ad segments.
