Shameless season 9 episode 6: How did Cameron Monaghan leave?
(Obviously, there are some spoilers from tonight’s new episode ahead.)
For most of this hour, it honestly didn’t feel altogether clear just how the producers were going to piece together the end of the character’s time on the show? We weren’t seeing all that much of him in the midst of Courteney Cox coming on board and learning that Ford had a secret double life that he had never bothered to tell Fiona about.

Yet, in the closing minutes many of the Gallaghers, sans Fiona, ended up bringing Ian to prison … where he learned that Mickey was his cellmate! Noel Fisher returned for one final scene with Cameron as Mickey told Ian that he got to pick his cell as a trade-off in a deal that he made regarding the cartel. There were some hints recently that Mickey could be making a return to the series, but it was far from a guarantee.
So is this really going to be the end of Ian’s time on the show? That’s something that the writers may debate down the road, but for now it does feel like it’s possible the character could resurface down the line depending on how long the series ends up lasting. We do think that Ian won’t be locked up forever and with that, it would be nice to see him back around in a potential series finale or other milestone down the line. Monaghan is departing in order to take on some new opportunities; he has already played two different parts on Gotham and we feel like a number of other interesting possibilities are out there for him depending on what he wants to next. The world is more or less his oyster here since he has so much considerable talent.
