Hawaii Five-0 season 9 episode 3 review: A heat wave, and a case for Tani & Junior

Hawaii Five-0 season 9 episode 3

Tonight, Hawaii Five-0 season 9 episode 3 brought you a rather-enormous heat wave, and with that, some pretty awesome cases.

To go along with that, you also had a lot of humor. This may have been the funniest story in quite a while, in between Junior watching football in Tani’s office with no pants or Grover completely going all-in on the perfect golf game despite the heat. Him trying to turn his caddy into a ventriloquist dummy was both incredibly awkward and comedy gold.

As for some of the serious cases, we saw Tani and Junior finding themselves in a crisis after they went out in the streets and eventually got their car stolen amidst a stand-off at a house over a pool incident. They had to wander around in the heat for hours, but in the process of that they actually bonded over what happened to Junior’s sister … and also ice cream and sorbet. (Apparently, Junior likes to live on the edge and have multiple flavors at the same exact time. What a rebel.)

Meanwhile, tonight we also got a sense of McGarrett and Danny trying to do their jobs while worried about the state of the food at the restaurant … and also Kamekona taking excess ice for his shaved-ice business. Business was booming, but he faced a near-revolt when he started hiking the prices due to the heat. Supply and demand, right? Steve and Danny had to unravel a mystery and with no power and limited resources, this was a little bit more difficult a mission than what they were used to.

The case itself was wrapped up a few minutes before the end of the episode, and at that point, everyone started to reconvene. Kamekona got his comeuppance, Grover was loving life after his golf game, and we do think that Tani and Junior have bonded more than ever … while also finding Tani’s stolen car. As it turns out, the only reason it was taken was because someone wanted to use the AC for a while. (Too bad for the two of them that the car’s battery died shortly after they found it.)

CarterMatt Verdict

As a whole, we do think that Hawaii Five-0 season 9 episode 3 delivered on a lot — especially with humor. The writers really seemed to relish the opportunity to be able to dive in and play around with the idea of a heat wave on the islands. We also love the fact that Grover brought his caddy around at the end in order to brag about his golf game.

Were we a little surprised that there was no real follow-up on Marrakesh tonight? Somewhat, but there were other things that needed to be attended to tonight. Also, we really are ‘shipping Tani and Junior after the ending tonight.
