Lodge 49 episode 9 review: Is Dud losing all sense of hope?

Lodge 49 episode 2

For most of Lodge 49 season 1, we’ve seen our main character Dud be almost the eternal optimist, even when there was no reason to be.

Yet, it was pretty clear through episode 9 that just about everything was going to hell in a handbasket, and that there weren’t many people who may or may not be precisely who they claimed to be. Take, for example, Gary. Who is he really, and what is it that Avery really is out for, and is there any hope that Dud and Ernie have of getting a return on their investment. At the moment, it certainly doesn’t feel like these two have much of any real hope for their future. It was also clear that Dud was using Captain in some ways as a father figure; when he realized that there may not be any oil under the poisoned land, that’s when he started to figure out that his father may not have been anything that he was cracked up to be, either.

By the end of the episode, we saw Dud and Ernie back in the Lodge lamenting many of their struggles and the situation that they now find themselves in. We could come up with all sorts of conspiracy theories about Gary and Avery possibly working together and that they are using some conspiracy theories of their own in order to take people for all they’re worth. At the end of the day, what really matters is that Dud and Ernie are now worse off than when they started.

As for what happened with Liz tonight, things did not exactly go great for her, either. She found herself in the next phase of her little corporate training process, which included her being on a boat surrounding by some other executive-types. She had a heart-to-heart with Janet about her future, but she was not entirely clear as to precisely what her future was going to be.

Liz wasn’t used to getting help; more than that, we’re not sure that Liz wanted help. It was after this conversation with Janet that she decided to do one of the craziest things to date, which was jump clean off the boat and swim off to shore. We have a feeling that she thought that this was going to be so much easier in her head than it ended up being.

CarterMatt Verdict

It’s funny that, just one week ago, Dud and Liz both thought that their lives were turning around and heading in a great direction. Now, they may be worse off than ever before. They don’t have money, they may not have opportunity, and some of Dud’s inner joy may be gone. The only thing going with him right now is that he had a nice conversation with the librarian from earlier this season, which maybe offers up some hope for the future.
