Are Last Man Standing season 8 renewal odds greater after big premiere?

Last Man Standing

After looking at some of the premiere ratings from Friday night, it’s fairly clear that the new iteration of Last Man Standing is a hit. The seventh season premiere throttled most of the competition, and it does make you think that this is a franchise Fox is going to want to keep around.

Even when you think back to the series’ time at ABC, it was hardly a ratings under-performer there. While it wasn’t getting the 1.8 rating that it got on Fox last night, it fared well given its timeslot and a relative lack of promotion. Now, it’s getting that promotion, and it is also capitalizing on a viewer demographic that feels under-represented elsewhere. Last Man Standing fans have shown a lot of loyalty, which is one of the reasons why the series was picked up again in the first place.

So is there a real chance already at a season 8 renewal? We do think that’s one of the options on the table, with another being trying to extent the current episode order. We do think that Fox will do what it can to keep this show around as long as possible if these ratings continue. Nobody gets this sort of rating on a Friday night anymore, and this is a big benefit for a network that isn’t faring as well on some other nights of the week.

In the long-term, we wouldn’t be surprised if Last Man Standing ends up being moved to a different night of the week, especially as Fox brings on SmackDown for Fridays at some point in 2019. We just think that they were taking a gamble on season 7 for the Tim Allen comedy; now that it has delivered, they can start to figure out precisely what they want to do from here.
