Could New Amsterdam get a full-season order? The case for it

At the moment, we are still in the early days of the fall season — with that, there haven’t been any shows given a full-season pickup just yet.

With that being said, is there a strong contender in New Amsterdam over at NBC? We like to think so for a number of different reasons, but it all starts back with the ratings. The premiere episode generated, with final adjustments factored in, a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic to go along with almost 8.4 million viewers. For a series that ended up airing at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time, that’s an incredibly good start. It’s also one of the best carryovers from This Is Us that we’ve had a chance to see so far, and we do think that this is something that absolutely goes a long way.

So how early could we see this show be given a full-season order? Think in terms of just a few weeks, since we don’t foresee this necessarily being something that is going to happen right away. We think that NBC will be at least reasonably cautious and wait for a little while before making some sort of long-term determination in regards to the future here, mostly because there does tend to be a lot of fluctuation that happens from the first through around the third episode.

As for whether or not this makes New Amsterdam the first show this year with a full-season pickup, that has a lot to do mostly with what some other networks decide to do with some of their shows. We do think that this is going to be one of the first, but it remains to be seen if another network will end up managing to beat it to the punch.
