The Walking Dead season 10: Lauren Cohan likely to return

Lauren Cohan

If the producers behind AMC’s The Walking Dead have their way, it seems likely that Lauren Cohan will return for a season 10. As for whether or not that happens, that remains to be seen — but this does feel like confirmation that the producers are not currently planning to kill the character off.

Speaking in a new interview with TV Guide, show executive producer Angela Kang confirmed that the writers “still plan to tell more story with Maggie … Lauren wants to. It will just be subject to her schedule. But hopefully we have her back next season.”

At the moment, Cohan is appearing alongside Scott Foley in the midseason series Whiskey Cavalier. That is going to be taking up the majority of her time moving forward, but given when The Walking Dead tends to start filming, she may have a window in there, even if her new show is renewed, to come back and do some more episodes. This is a different situation than the one with Andrew Lincoln, who seems to just be moving on and won’t be coming back for some extended arc in the future. AMC is promoting the upcoming episodes as the end of the road for Rick Grimes.

The Walking Dead season 9 premieres in early October, and both Maggie and Rick are going to be featured for at least a handful of episodes. This is going to be a pivotal season for the show, as they have to convince viewers that even in the midst of great change, there is still some interesting story to be told with some of these people. Change is often hard for many shows, especially when it comes to losing one of your leads.

We do still think that it does benefit The Walking Dead to have some sort of ratings shakeup; whether or not this is the right way of doing it remains to be seen.
