The Walking Dead season 9 promoting itself with Rick Grimes’ exit

The Walking Dead season 9 is taking an interesting strategy leading into its debut over on AMC — specifically, it’s hyping up the exit of Rick Grimes at the end of many of its promos. The latest example of this can be found below.

By and large, promoting The Walking Dead with Andrew Lincoln’s exit may feel like a given — at least for the people who hang out on the internet. The news about the actor’s exit has been out there for months, and he talked about it pretty openly at Comic-Con. It doesn’t seem like he wanted the news to be out there when it was, and that does make us wonder a little bit of this was going to be something production was planning on keeping under wraps before it got completely spoiled. Ultimately, the secret is out there and because of that, apparently AMC thinks that they may as well run with it for a little while.

Now that we’ve said this, though, let’s also throw this little reminder out there: Not everyone reads the internet, and there are some Walking Dead franchise fans who just check out the show and go about their day the rest of the time. With that in mind, we do have to think that there are some people out there who are spoiled by this. These promos effectively take that last bit of wonder away from a small group who could have had it otherwise.

Is this the right move? For ratings maybe, and we understand that The Walking Dead has lost some numbers over time. We just have to wonder still from a big-picture perspective when there are so many different demographics of people who choose to watch the show.
