NCIS season 17: Should we be expecting a renewal already?

NCIS

Even though season 16 has yet to formally premiere, is it wrong to automatically expect an NCIS season 17 renewal? We certainly don’t think so for a number of different reasons.

For starters, we are talking here about a series that has certainly established itself at this point to be the most-watched drama in the world. Despite all of the cast changes over the years, NCIS remains very much profitable. It’s a syndication monster, it performs well internationally, and it also is spearheading the other two shows that are a part of the universe.

Also, we think that some of the cast could be locked in for a season 17 depending on the length of their deals. Many actors signed back up over the spring/summer, and often we get two-year deals for the show.

So at this point, the ability of the series to get a season 17 really comes down to whether or not CBS wants to order more of the show, and it feels almost like a given that it will pending some dramatic drop in the ratings. The first few episodes of the fall should really tell the tale when it comes to NCIS and its future. This is a show that often tends to get its best ratings either in the fall or in January, and we think that producers will probably be looking at it to deliver a great start. The premiere episode, after all, is going to be following up a big cliffhanger; you can see a little bit more information on that just by taking a look at the sneak peek below.

Odds are, come March or April we’ll have an even clearer picture of what the future for NCIS is going to be as a whole — but there is a reason for optimism right now.
