Will Shameless season 9 continue impressive ratings rise?

Shameless season 9

Moving into Shameless season 9, there are many interesting questions worth wondering … including some about the ratings.

Are we going to see the series continue what has been a rather impressive upward trajectory? It’s certainly one of the more interesting phenomenon that we’ve been able to see for any show, really regardless of the genre or the network. Season 8 of Shameless, after all, averaged a grand total of 1.5 million live viewers, which is up more than 5% from the week before.

While there are some other examples out there of shows that do manage to increase their ratings averages from one season to the next, let’s go ahead and put something into perspective now: Very few of them manage to do it so late in the season. The fact that this is a premium-cable show is all the more impressive. The majority of viewers out there with the capacity to watch Shameless live have other venues in which they could do so, whether it be their DVR, streaming, or via the app. The average viewer of this show is living a little bit of a better life than some of the Gallaghers are.

Yet, despite there being so many options to watch this show, it still manages to be appointment viewing for many people. Thank the writing for this, in addition to Netflix for helping to build a great audience for it via past seasons. Also, the cast deserves a ton of credit for injecting so much energy into such strange, colorful people.

For all of these reasons, plus the anticipation surrounding the end of Emmy Rossum’s time on the show, our feeling is that season 9 will average close to 1.5 million viewers. We do think it’s going to be hard for the show to keep rising (it’s premiering on the first week of the NFL season), but with numbers like the ones it is getting, it’s not hard to figure out why Showtime keeps bringing it back.
