Making It finale review: Was Jo Gick, Amber Kemp-Gerstel, or Khiem Nguyen the winner?
Before getting to answering that question right away, let’s start off by saying this: We love this show. Making It was a real breath of fresh air over the summer that brought much of what we love from reality competition shows in this vein — creativity, fun, and interesting contestants. While sometimes drama-based competition shows are great, we’re happy that this one is more about humor and being supporting each other. Amber, Jo, and Khiem all bring so much positive energy to what they do.

If there is one thing that we’d change moving forward, it’s to figure out a way to give more of a incentive to win the Faster Craft Challenge early on. Jo won that, and we would’ve liked to see that give her even more of a leg up in the final challenge. Yet, both of the challenges were fun as we got a chance to see the makers actually help to plan a wedding — or at least certain parts of it. Given that this is the sort of thing that people remember for the rest of their lives, this had to be done right.
Admittedly, we’re not a super-crafty person. With that, it was hard to really know who the winner among the three will be. We did really like Jo’s chicken coop in the final challenge, though! Really, we thought that Jo was the best for the finale, but Khiem was our favorite for the entire season. Yet, we also loved Amber in episode 5! This wasn’t really a case where we would be mad by a certain person winning.
In the end, the winner was … Khiem! He ended up emerging victorious, and we almost thought that the twist was going to be that he got married under his own backdrop! We also kind of love that he got a giant check made out of wood in the process.
CarterMatt Verdict
We do think Nick Offerman and Amy Poehler did a great job of summarizing what this show was about in the closing minutes — this was a show about celebrating things that are small but important in the world. It’s about being personal and celebrating something sweet and crafty. It’s about doing the little things to make other people smile.
This was such a warm, lovely show and we honestly cannot wait to see more of it in the future. Khiem is a great winner, and we hope that there are many other great winners coming up.
