Law & Order: Hate Crimes: When could new SVU spin-off air?

The big news came out earlier today that Law & Order: Hate Crimes is now official. The new SVU spin-off series is going to be entering the Dick Wolf franchise over the next year or so. The big question is when.

With that in mind, why not kick off some of the speculation now? Based on the timing of this announcement, it feels like the earliest that this new series will be introduced on SVU is in early 2019. If that happens, it may be possible in theory that Hate Crimes could launch in the spring. The model that we are looking at here is Station 19 and how it launched in relation to Grey’s Anatomy last year. The project came together throughout the fall and by the new year, was set to really propel itself forward in a rather big way.

Hate Crimes is currently slated to run a grand total for 13 episodes and with that in mind, it could potentially run from March until late May. Another possibility here is that it comes on the air in the summer or next fall — though we see the summer launch extremely unlikely. The spring idea just makes sense given that Will & Grace doesn’t run a full season; with that, NBC could just opt to move SVU up to 9:00 p.m. on Thursdays this spring with the spin-off following it not too long after that.

If there is one thing that we do know about NBC, though, it’s this: They are going to do everything that they can in order to make this show a success. We know that they are constantly looking for ways to reinvent the Law & Order brand and this is the most substantial way that they’ve done so in many years. While Law & Order: True Crime was absolutely an ambitious idea, it was always meant to be an anthology rather than a standalone series. It also remains to be seen if it will ever come out.
