Will Magnum PI be first new primetime series to get full-season order?

We’re getting very close to the start of the fall season and with that, of course, comes a number of questions. For us, a big one is this: What will be the first new series to get a full-season order?

At the moment, we do think that there are a few different shows to be fairly confident in. After all, New Amsterdam on NBC has the pivotal This Is Us lead-in before it. Meanwhile, over on CBS FBI has a great lineup around it and also Dick Wolf as an executive producer.

Yet, if we are to make a somewhat-bold prediction right now, we’re leaning towards Magnum PI as the first show to get a full season out of the newcomers — and for a few specific reasons.

1. The series’ clout – While we know there are people nervous about Magnum PI without Tom Selleck, at the same time this is still a show looking to capture the soul of the original. The name itself should lead to some viewers coming on board.

2. The clout behind the scenes – Peter M. Lenkov is as golden an executive producer as you’re going to get at CBS with MacGyver and Hawaii Five-0 also on the fall schedule. He’s shown a knack for being able to develop shows early and then figure out how to cultivate them into something with staying power.

3. The commitment already – There has been a great deal of promotion for the series already and we think CBS is going to want to give them that commitment early so that viewers start to feel comfortable.

4. The timeslot – Mondays at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time have been a trouble spot for CBS for a while and when you look across the schedule, the only similar competition we see Magnum PI having is via 9-1-1 over on Fox. If this show manages to life the timeslot year-to-year average by more than 20%, an early full-season pickup seems like a lock.

Do you think that Magnum PI will be the first series to be picked up for a full season? Share right now in the comments!
