Will Blue Bloods ever consider a spin-off series?

Blue Bloods season 9

Is a Blue Bloods spin-off something that CBS should ever consider at some point in the future?

We do think that this is a good time to start to really look at this question, mostly because it’s starting to feel increasingly clear that this is one of the network’s most-lucrative franchises. Even if it doesn’t get a whole lot of promotion, its ratings remain fantastic and there is an extremely loyal legion of fans who would follow it anywhere.

One thing we do feel strongly about is this: If CBS does ever take more of a serious look at this, there isn’t really much of a need for it to be in the near future. After all, the flagship show is great at the moment because of the ensemble — if you start to lose someone from that, we’d certainly be rather sad over it. Our feeling is more that you wait until near the end of the show and then start to look towards something then.

What could you do? There are a number of natural ways to go about this, whether it be Jamie and Eddie having their own show about crime-fighting and potentially starting a family; or, move Erin somewhere else and let her have a full series about the D.A.’s office. There’s probably something that could be done with some of the series’ smaller characters like a Baker or an Anthony, but it would need to have a honed-down premise in order to work. The most appealing option would be to have a series about someone in the Reagan family, but the question you have to wonder then is what happens to family dinner if they’re not there. It wouldn’t be quite the same!

Yet, these are things that Blue Bloods should be thinking about over the next few years — if this series does end, CBS shouldn’t want to just have the show be over if there is still a demand for more of some of the characters. There’s just not a hurry.
