Emmy Rossum leaving Shameless after season 9; see emotional post

Fiona -

If Shameless does return for a tenth season on Showtime, it’s going to be doing so without one of its biggest stars in Emmy Rossum.

In a new post on Facebook, Rossum (who has been on the series since the beginning) confirmed her exit with an emotional post explaining what the series and Fiona Gallagher have meant to her. It’s a chance to be surrounded by a larger TV family, to make connections, and play a part that will be beloved for many years to come. Shameless is in many ways a unicorn of a series in the first place, one that was a little under-the-radar before becoming a larger hit as time has gone by.

In the full post, Rossum does note that she feels like there are many Gallagher experiences that could be coming — with that in mind, we have to think that it’s possible the series will continue on beyond this season. There has been no formal word that this is the final season of the series. Yet, with Emma Kenney doing The Conners as a regular and Rossum saying goodbye, you do have to wonder about the show’s overall longevity. (Kenney has not confirmed that she is leaving Shameless, and it does still feel possible she could balance both.)

Rossum issued this statement weeks before the series is going to return to Showtime; you can even see more of what she has to say about her story this season over at the link here. Fiona has evolved significantly since the beginning of the series, and really, you can argue now that she is the most functional member of this family. That may be a sufficient way to write her out the series, since you can always make the argument now that this character is getting an opportunity to actually move forward to do some bigger, better things with her life.
