Outlander gets involved in Sam Heughan – Caitriona Balfe SNL campaign

Could Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe host Saturday Night Live … together? Well, it’s at least a fun thing to discuss.

If you’re a longtime CarterMatt reader, then you may be fairly familiar with this idea already — we’ve discussed it in the past, albeit with fairly realistic expectations. This is not a show that casts TV actors as hosts very often, especially ones from premium cable. Peter Dinklage of Game of Thrones is probably one of the best recent exceptions, but even that came years after we first expected to.

Yet, while we do still think that it’s unlikely for it happen, there are a few different reasons to be hopeful about it. For one, Starz is getting involved now! Check out the tweet below.

Also, there are some timing / logistical reasons why this could work out. For starters, Heughan already has a good relationship with Kate KcKinnon, who is arguably the biggest star on SNL these days. The two did work together on the movie The Spy Who Dumped Me. Meanwhile, the filming schedule for Outlander actually would make them available for at least the first few months of the SNL season. One of the reasons why this hasn’t been a realistic possibility in the past is because the show was in production throughout most of the SNL season. This isn’t the sort of show that you can come in and and work for a day — you really need to spend almost all of the week in New York if you want to make it perfect. Doing it in November, right as the press tour for season 4 is happening, would be perfect! As a matter of fact, we’re reasonably confident that there would be a new SNL episode airing on November 3. What could be better?

As for why we want Caitriona and Sam to host together, we think both of them have comedic sensibility and timing. It’s also unlikely that they would be able to each host separately … though then again, all of this is unlikely. SNL does at times do co-hosts (they have with Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler), but typically this happens with alumni or people with some experience on the show.

Nonetheless, keep dreaming. It would be a lot of fun if it happens.
