Shameless season 9: William H. Macy on Frank’s arc

Shameless season 9

Shameless season 9 is coming to Showtime next month, and as you start to look towards the story of William H. Macy as Frank, you should know things are getting ridiculous.

Frank is going to be up to his old tricks this season, whether that be causing problems at PTA meetings (let’s just say that STDs could be involved) or getting involved in the political world, doing what he can to fight for the “disadvantaged” white man in 2018. Whether or not Frank means anything that he says is almost inconsequential, given that he has and always been be a lazy guy who is mostly just interested in taking advantage of something that is presented before him. Here, that is the frustration and anger of a certain subset of people.

In a new video over at Showtime (watch here), William H. Macy describes the arc for Frank this season with the following message:

“We find Frank at his Lothario best this season. I’m so proud … We’re going to get political. Frank sees a way to both help his pocket and the country at the same time. Getting to play a character for 100 episodes — I’ve learned a lot about acting, how to find the humor and the humanity in being at the bottom rung of the ladder. At the end of the day that family loves each other, and they’re striving — they got nowhere to go but up. You don’t even have to be the good guy — as long as you’re working towards something, we get caught up in it.”

Hopefully, this is a season that gives you a pretty panoramic view of Frank as a person. While him being a terrible human and opportunist can be funny, we do hope that there are some more vulnerable moments sprinkled in here somewhere.
