Moving into tonight’s finale, we’re in a somewhat-strange position when it comes to Preacher season 4. We don’t know if it’s happening!
Back when the first season of the Dominic Cooper-led series first began on AMC, the general assumption was that this was going to be the sort of show that could really last however long the cast and crew wanted it to. It got off to a great start, is based on a good property, and has great star power with Seth Rogen behind the scenes as an executive producer.

So when you think about all of this, the ratings decline for the series over the years has certainly been a little bit strange — to put it lightly. This season, which has had at least a decent lead-in the past couple of weeks, is still only averaging a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That marks a decline of around 40% in live viewers (at least in this demographic) from season 2, which was down in turn by a wide margin over season 1. Maybe there are just a lot of viewers out there who don’t get Preacher as a series, but at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter why people are not watching. The reality here is just that viewers, for one reason or another, just aren’t checking the show out as much as they used to live. Some of these people may have bailed and are now choosing to check out the show after the fact, whereas some other people may have decided to just not watch anymore at all.
At the moment, we consider Preacher to be a bubble show for the network, one that AMC will probably look at in terms of its DVR ratings and streaming performance before figuring out whether or not they want to bring it back for another season. For now, we’re optimistic that we’ll get at least one more season … but you never want to be overly confident either. Networks have let us down too much for that.
