Vikings season 5: Katheryn Winnick hints at aging up Lagertha

Vikings season 6 renewal

Vikings season 5 will return with new episodes this November, and as the series goes along, many characters are of course going to age. That includes Katheryn Winnick’s Lagertha, and in order to play an older version of the character, she has to go through quite the makeup process!

In a new post on Instagram (see below), Winnick thanks the Emmy-nominated prosthetic and makeup team for the three-hour process it takes to get to appear like an older version of the character. Aging up actors is no easy task, and that’s one of the reasons why we don’t think that there are all that many shows out there that really take the leap and try to do it, but Vikings has already done a wonderful job with that as we saw with Ragnar over the years and how incredible his aging process looked. There is a reason why this team is nominated for an Emmy for their work.

When Vikings season 5 does return, Lagertha is going to be in a challenging place. She fully expected to die in the battles at the end of episode 10, but she’s still standing and Astrid is gone. To go along with that, Ivar has more power than ever and she finds herself without much of the same stability that she had for many years as it seems that she will be losing Kattegat. This is going to be easily one of the most challenging positions that she’s been in so far on the series and she has a good many challenges that she’ll be forced to take on as a result of that … and there’s also still that prophecy from the Seer hanging over her head… which of Ragnar’s sons is going to be her undoing? The easy answer is Ivar, but this is a beautifully complicated show that never leads you down the expected path and it’s one of the reasons that this is one of our favorite shows on television.
