The Good Doctor season 2: Should the series resolve Kenny plot?
At the end of season 1, it was pretty clear that Chris D’Elia’s character was not meant to be a good guy. He was a heel and a jerk, designed mostly for the purpose of showing Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) that there are people who will take advantage of his desire for friendship. The dude not only “borrowed” his TV, but then wouldn’t him get it back or hang out with him in the process. He’s also got a criminal history, which is another bit of evidence that he is not a good dude.
We don’t think we need to see Kenny again from the vantage point of seeing Shaun try to hang out with him, mostly because it feels like we’ve already seen him deal with some of that pain already. Yet, we do think that there is a little bit of value that could come with getting to see Lea (Paige Spara) return and work with Shaun to really get revenge on Kenny in a big way. This would be a chance for Shaun to have a victory, recognize his value, and show him further the difference between real friends and those who are just looking to exploit him.
Do we want Shaun and Lea to be together down the road? Sure, but we don’t think the Kenny conflict should be about the two of them working together and working on their way towards becoming a couple. Instead, we see it more as a great opportunity to see Shaun building himself up and being empowered by someone who cares for him. This would help him to be an even stronger, better person and friend down the road.
While we think that this would be a good send-off to the Kenny conflict, we’ll have to wait until this fall to see precisely what happens next. (We should note that, at the end of season 1, some interviews suggested that we’d seen the last of Kenny. We just think one more appearance would be a better sort of emotional send-off.)
