The Blacklist season 5 spotlight: The future for Donald Ressler
Suffice it to say, this is a man who has a lot probably constantly on his mind, especially when you consider where his journey began on the show in contrast to where he is now. He finds himself now a character who has killed and done some pretty terrible things, and we certainly have to imagine that this is not where he envisioned himself when he first became a part of the FBI.
Yet, we don’t think that Ressler has completely lost some element of moral code, and that is a good starting-off point for what we want to see moving into season 6 for him: We want him to be able to find that again and start to get a good sense as to where he now is emotionally. It’s going to be important for the sake of better understanding his journey and, beyond that, also giving the show an element of a moral compass again.
Beyond that, why not implement a few of these other ideas?
Create more of an adversarial role with Reddington again – We think the show works best when there are some real conflicts between the FBI and James Spader’s character, and while we know that Donald has collaborated with him before, we like to think that this new iteration could be back to being more hesitant than ever to do anything with him.
Establish a better partnership with Liz again – We really want to see some echoes of the early seasons with the two of them working together. Ressler could be a trusted ally for Liz, especially if she opts to tell him the truth about what is going on with Fake Reddington and the reveal that happened at the end of season 5.
Where is his life at romantically? – We do want to see a little more of what Donald’s life is like at this point away from the FBI. We’d like to see all of this explored more, and of course we do wonder whether or not Ressler / Liz is a ‘ship that is picked up down the line. If not, can’t the guy be happy and have a normal relationship with someone else?

Ressler the boyscout was boring. His character was much more interesting when he was morally conflicted in some manner. He needs to have a life outside the FBI that provides another dimension.

Would love to see Ressler interacting with all the characters, especially Aram. Donald is the character who was never quite able to trust Reddington, not as effected by the criminal’s charms….so he would be a great person for Liz to confide in. Also, they were/ are great friends and partners. Love him and Reddington verbally sparring! Give Ress something to smile about…a friendship, a romance…He’s worried about everyone else all the time! Love these articles on our Blacklist characters!!
