Blue Bloods season 9: Why isn’t there more consistent promotion?

Blue Bloods season 9

Blue Bloods season 9 is premiering on CBS come September 28, but unless you’re a devoted fan, you may not know that.

Ultimately, Blue Bloods is the sort of show you may not know all that much about at all unless you’re watching Friday nights at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time. While it may be one of the most-watched drama series on TV week after week, at the same time you don’t see a ton of advertising for it or big magazine stories.

So what’s going on with this? As we explain in the weekly Blue Bloods video, one of the fundamental reasons why we don’t see a lot of promotion for the show is that it already performs well-enough as it is. There may also be a perception that there’s not too much more it can improve when you consider A) the strength of its ratings already and B) the total number of viewers that are available on Friday night. A lot of people are off doing other things and with that, Friday ratings thresholds are different than some other nights of the week.

When it comes to promotion across the media, demographics may be a part of the problem. Regardless of whether it is right or wrong, many networks often used an antiquated system where they are reliant on demo viewership. Blue Bloods’ average viewer is older than almost any other network show out there, and with that, many publications unfortunately ignore it. We wish that wasn’t the case, mostly because we’ve certainly seen a movement to court older viewers across many streaming services.

No matter what, getting more viewers for Blue Bloods is something that we want mostly from the vantage point of giving a great show more love. Does it need more viewers, though? Probably not, if for no other reason than that the ratings are rather good as it is and the show will likely last however long the cast and crew want it to.
