Saturday Night Live season 44: Should there be new featured player?

SNL

Is Saturday Night Live season 44 angling to bring in another featured player, and should they be?

Let’s start here by rewinding a little bit to the news from earlier this week, as it was revealed that Luke Null will not be returning as a featured player for the upcoming batch of episodes. That was a bummer to us, mostly because we do think that he is a talented guy who just never had a proper opportunity to shine on that stage. One of the big problems that this past season ran into was the simple fact that they had effectively too many cooks in the kitchen — there was a large regular cast for SNL this season and, to go along with that, you also did have a rather hefty amount of cameos.

If you do bring in another featured player, whoever it is will probably have to contend with all of this, whether it be a ton of other cast members, a ton of creative voices behind the scenes, and also a number of big names who could be brought in for all sorts of things. The reality here is that in 2018, SNL monetizes itself in part through to sketches going viral and getting that digital bump — cameos help with that. It’s become a show more about short-term gain than it has long-term success and that’s just something that we’ve had to come to terms with over time. We may not love it, but it is what it is.

Even in spite of all of this, though, we do want to continue to see a new cast member come on board season 44 just because of the fact that there is a great deal of value in it. If Lorne Michaels and the rest of the producers find someone who is new and exciting, they may be able to break through despite the immense logjam that exists with so many people on board.
