Luke Null leaving Saturday Night Live after one season

Saturday Night Live review

Alas, Luke Null is going to be heading back to Studio 8H for Saturday Night Live season 43 — instead, the performer is saying his goodbyes.

According to a new report coming in from Vulture, Null is leaving the series after just one year as a featured player, which really shouldn’t come as a surprise. Typically, the performer with the lowest amount of screen time on the prior season gets jettisoned, whether it be via producers or via their own doing. Null is a talented guy and came onto SNL with an extensive background, but sometimes being on this show is something that isn’t right for everyone. It can be really hard to get sketches on the air or find a place in the cast, especially in this modern era of the show.

A certain degree of Null’s frequent omission in episodes is the series’ own doing, mostly because season 43 seemed at times to be about celebrity cameos more so than actual appearances from cast members. That was the double-edged sword of casting Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump. As great as he was in the part at first, it really set in motion a lot of other castings that could’ve gone to other cast members. For example, look at John Goodman playing Rex Tillerson on a number of occasions.

We certainly think Null’s going to have a chance to land some other comedy gigs. Just remember for a minute here that many people with short SNL stints, whether it be Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller, Jenny Slate, or Julia Louis-Dreyfus, ended up being enormous stars after the fact. We consider Louis-Dreyfus in particular one of the greatest comedic performers of the last fifty years.

This move probably does signal that SNL is going to be looking to add at least one new featured player for season 44, but it’s a little bit too early to say for sure who this is going to be.
