Tonight, The Sinner season 2 episode 3 continued the case of Julian, but at the same time, also raised a number of different questions along the way. Take, for example, the status of Marin, Heather’s childhood friend. What happened to her? That is a case that Heather is still trying everything in her power to investigate.
Via flashbacks, we did get a chance to see Marin and Heather having some conversations, including whether or not the two should revisit the Mosswood complex. We continued to see their history play out in the past; yet, in the present Heather was starting to sense more connections between her and the community.
At the same time, Harry Ambrose was still doing what he could in order to figure out what was really going on with Adam, Bess, and Julian. He pressed Vera for information and this led, in turn, to her making a new proclamation: That Julian was abducted rather than just taken on some sort of trip. After this, Vera did her part to be increasingly strange, doing some sort of odd worship ritual to what appeared to be her own deity. Maybe she was trust praying in hopes that somehow, things could change when it comes to Julian being tried in criminal court. This was unexpected, and you could see that this was starting to cause whatever plans that Vera once had to unravel. Julian wasn’t prepared to lie and in the aftermath of it, he started to lose it.
Oh, and speaking of losing it, that’s what we did when Heather passed down an interesting theory: Vera is not the mother. More on that in a minute.
Before that, Harry took a break in this episode to reconnect with his old community, or at least better understand them. This was a reminder to him, more so than anything else, of just how different he really was from much of these people — and how disconnected that he really was from the world at large.
Now, let’s get back to the mother accusation
Through Heather’s research, she was able to find a book from Marin that had the name “Julian” circled in it. The more thought that she put into the case, the more interesting things became. Marin may have been impregnated while at Mosswood. It just made some sense and, to make matters more difficult, the doctor wasn’t there at the time of her birth. Therefore, there was no real proof that Vera was the mother.
Well, as it turns out, Dr. Poole happens to be a man of mystery in his own right. He wasn’t all that interested in talking about other visits to Mosswood. Instead, he seemed to flee … or rather, took off in order to take his own life. The big surprise here is that Dr. Poole had a smaller version of the rock … the same thing that Vera was doing her own worshipping in front of earlier on.
The end of this episode was violent and gross, as apparently, whatever this doctor saw at the compound was so horrific that he didn’t want anyone to know.
