The Fosters spin-off Good Trouble coming in January 2019

Freeform had made it clear that their spin-off of The Fosters in Good Trouble would be coming next year, and now, we’ve got even more of a specific premiere window: January. This is confirmed in the new preview HERE via the network, which features Callie and Mariana beginning the next phase of their lives in Los Angeles.

As the show’s producers explain in this video, the idea behind this series is something that they all collectively figured out rather quickly once they realized that The Fosters would not be moving on. After all, the original series was by and large a coming-of-age story and you can easily make the argument that this is a natural extension of that. You’ve still got Maia Mitchell and Cierra Ramirez in the cast and beyond that, you are bringing their characters of Callie and Mariana into young adulthood. They now know some of what they want to do with the rest of their lives, but they are going to be figuring out rather quickly that achieving their dreams is not as easy as they first hoped.

For starters, being in Los Angeles is rather different than being in the greater San Diego area. It’s a much more cutthroat place, and they are both entering situations that are certainly challenging. For Callie, she is working to enact change while under a conservative judge, someone who may not be all that inclined to listen to her. Meanwhile, with Mariana she is entering to tech space, a male-dominated industry where she has to deal with prejudice both due to her gender as well as her age. If she can figure out how to navigate some of these difficult spaces, she could prove to be immensely successful.

In the end, these challenges are probably going to be good things for the future of Callie and Mariana … but they probably have to make it there first.
