Outlander notes: Morag Gunn MacKenzie casting; season 5 writing staff
Per a new listing, it appears as though Elysia Welch has landed the role of Morag Gunn MacKenzie for two episodes on the upcoming fourth season premiering this fall. While this character has a fairly small role in the book Drums of Autumn, it is an important and emotional one. (Warning: Book spoilers ahead.)
In the story of Drums of Autumn, Roger encounters Morag — who is actually a distant ancestor of his — while making the voyage to America in the 18th century. She was hiding in the below decks of the ship with her son Jeremiah, hoping to keep him from being thrown overboard in the midst of a pox outbreak. Morag is a character who also appears later on in The Fiery Cross, and it’s pretty clear just how important she is to Roger and the future of his entire family.
Of course, we’re curious how important she will be within the story of Outlander the TV show — certainly scenes often get cut for time, but Morag aboard the ship feels like far too important a moment for the series to really ignore it.

CarterMatt has exclusively confirmed that Megan Ferrell Burke (Manhattan) has been added to the season 5 writing staff for the upcoming season, and we have this news for a very personal reason — she’s the cousin of site co-founder Jessica Carter! We’re super-thrilled for her (Monday was her first day), and excited to see the creative opportunities that come with being a part of the show. We’re also thrilled to check out the fifth season itself, though that is something that we’re going to be waiting on for a while.
