This Is Us season 3: Don’t expect many more celebrity cameos

This Is Us season 3

When This Is Us season 3 airs on NBC this fall, it doesn’t appear that the focus is going to be featuring any other big celebrities in some of Kevin Pearson’s stories.

One of the issues that many hit shows do run into is a stunt-casting problem — namely, because their stories are so good there are a number of actors who are eager to come over and play parts in the story. This was a regular occurrence on Empire when it was drawing huge ratings, and like Empire, This Is Us does have a mechanism for bringing these guest-stars in — the occupation of one of the characters. It makes sense that Kevin would be working with some of these characters, which is probably why Sylvester Stallone was cast in the past.

Yet, moving forward, we don’t get the sense that this is a priority. Speaking via The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Isaac Aptaker had the following to say on the subject:

“We always talk about names. And there are famous people who are big fans of the show that we’re big fans of … It’s always about trying to find that balancing act of is it organic to the story, or is it going to be wildly distracting to, all of a sudden, have Usher walk into our storyline?”

We do actually think that if This Is Us does really throw Kevin into the world of another big-budget project, it is valuable to cast some big names again. It’s not really stunt-casting here in that so much of the show is emotional. In order to understand how Kevin may feel working alongside Tom Cruise in a big movie, for example, it makes sense to have Tom Cruise there. It’s harder to recreate that with a fake famous person.
