This Is Us season 3 to kick off with 38th birthdays, trying for less tears

This Is Us season 3

What’s coming up on This Is Us season 3? Well, for starters, the premiere seems to be actually kicking off with a happy occasion.

While at the TCA Summer Press Tour today, it was revealed that the first episode of the season is going to be geared around the Big Three having a chance to all celebrate their 38th birthdays, something that is a little more happy and joyous then we are normally used to with this show. In general, it does feel as though we’re gearing up for a season that is a little bit less about moments that will have us reaching for the tissues and ice cream and more so about having hope for the future. Executive producer Elizabeth Berger described the tone (via TVLine) as follows:

“We felt like a the end of Season 2, our family had grieved and processed [Jack’s death] … This is a hopeful season and a season about true new beginnings for everybody.”

We’re glad to see that the show is starting to move past obsessing over a mystery that most of the key characters had already known and lived … though there is another mystery that the series seems to be working to get us through this coming season. Remember the closing minutes of season 2 with Randall preparing for something that he just isn’t ready for? Well, rest assured that this is going to be a key part of the story as well. The third season is going to take its time building towards a reveal regarding that storyline later this season. It doesn’t look like it’s something that the producers are trying to keep away from you for the long-term, so you can at least have a little bit of solace in that.

This Is Us season 3 is poised to premiere on NBC in late September. Given the success of the first two years, it feels fair to say that the expectations are through the roof that the show remains as good as its been.
